The serine/threonine protein phosphatase PP1-gamma catalytic subunit, or protein phosphatase 1C catalytic subunit (PPP1CC or A4042), is one of the catalytic subunits of the serine/threonine protein phosphatase PP1 and belongs to the PPP family of protein phosphatases. The PP1 catalytic subunits exist in a complex with different regulatory subunits. More than 50 regulatory subunits have been reported to interact with PP1C. It is believed that the regulatory subunits modulate the specificity and diversity of PP1 functions, working as target subunits. These interactions may serve to designate specific substrates, regulate activity, and direct to distinct cell localization. Specifically PPP1CC is involved in carbohydrate and glycogen metabolism. Homozygous null mutant mice are infertile with a severe impairment in spermatogenesis.
