MAPK3/A0265

The mitogen-activated protein kinase 3 (MAPK3), also known as extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1 (ERK1) or A0265, is a proline-directed, serine/threonine protein kinase from the CMGC group, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) family.

It is phosphorylated and activated by MEK kinases. Differently to ERK2 knock-out mice, ERK1 null mice are viable, fertile and normal size. ERK1 null mice show an enhancement of striatum-dependent long-term memory and higher levels of activity in open field tests. These mice showed no major defects in hippocampus and amygdale-dependent emotional learning.
